Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)
It opened in the theaters today, so let's look at the latest movie from Marvel, Ant-Man and the Wasp.
The Movie:
Ant-Man and the Wasp is the 20th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Like it's predecessor, this movie is receiving generally favorable reviews. Notably, with this movie, the Wasp becomes the first female super hero in the MCU to have her name in the title of the movie.
This movie is set two years after the events of Captain America: Civil War. Scott Lang, as part of a plea deal due to his participation in the events of that movie, has spent the last two years under house arrest and is scheduled to be released in three days. After he receives what might be message from the quantum realm, he attempts to contact Hank Pym, who, along with Hope, have spent the last two years on the run due to their association with Scott. Hope kidnaps Scott to use him in her and her father's attempt to rescue her mother Janet from the quantum realm. As they acquire the last of the materials they need, the trio faces threats from a black market dealer, the FBI, and a mysterious young woman who can phase in and out of physical reality.
Like Ant-Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp is a fun movie, with a good mix of action and humor. The returning cast is just as good as the first time around, and Michelle Pfeiffer and Laurence Fishburne are good additions to the mix. Randall Park gets several laughs in his portrayal of FBI Agent Jimmy Woo, and Hannah John-Kamen brings some pathos to the tragedy of her villainous Ghost. A special note must also be given to Abby Ryder Fortson, who as Scott's daughter Cassie gets a bit more to do this time around and is wonderfully charming. There are some nice callbacks to the first film and to the larger MCU. And I'm not going to spoil it, but that first post-credits scene - dang!
Christophe Beck returns to score this sequel, and his music is just as fun and even more exciting than the score to the first Ant-Man. In particular, the music during the climactic car chase is a blast.
Presence in the Parks:
Given that this is the newest film from Disney, Ant-Man and the Wasp has been getting some promotional love at Disneyland at the Tomorrowland Theater. Given the Marvel restrictions on the east coast, I'm curious to see if there will be any promotion at all at Walt Disney World, but I assume most likely not.
