Wreck-It Ralph (2012)

Since today the new trailer for the sequel came out, today's selection is the movie Wreck-It Ralph.

The Movie:

Wreck-It Ralph is the 52nd movie in the Disney Animated Canon.  The title character is the villain of a 1980s style arcade game, Fix-It Felix Jr.  Tired of being treated poorly by the Nicelanders in his own game, Ralph enters the game Hero's Duty in order to win a medal to prove himself.  However, a mishap lands him in the racing game Sugar Rush, where he meets a "glitch" named Vanellope, and the two outcasts soon find each other helping one another.

This movie is full of characters from various video game franchises with plenty of additional references and shout-outs popping up along the way.  In some cases, these characters received a disproportionate of coverage in the promotion of the movie.  For the most part, the movie is primarily centered around Ralph, Vanellope, Felix, and Sergeant Calhoun, and the result is a fairly engaging and original story.

The soundtrack is highlighted with various catchy if fairly forgettable pop songs, but at times the score does a nice job of matching the style of the different genres of video games depicted.  The impressive visuals are a highlight of the movie, but Wreck-It Ralph's biggest strength, besides all the fun Easter eggs, is the heart at the center of the story.

On an interesting note, the upcoming sequel will be just the third sequel (or fourth if you count the 2011 Winnie-the-Pooh as a sequel) to be part of the Disney Animated Canon, following The Rescuers Down Under and Fantasia 2000.  It will also be Disney's first sequel in the modern age of animation franchises, which is a stark contrast to rival studios and even their own sister company Pixar, which in its first 20 films has five sequels and two part 3s.

Presence in the Parks:

Oddly, there's not much at all in the parks currently.  This is even more odd considering that Wreck-It Ralph and Frozen are the only two Disney Animation films currently with sequels in production, yet Frozen was given a lasting presence in the parks almost immediately and Wreck-It Ralph has not been.

There was once a Wreck-It Ralph character meet at Hollywood Studios, but that has been rotated out.

The last time I was at WDW in 2015 Wreck-It Ralph had been inserted as a segment in the castle projection show, which given the capabilities of the technology can be updated frequently.

One rumor that does keep popping up is that a Wreck-It Ralph attraction will go in Tomorrowland in place of the recently closed Stitch attraction, but nothing official has been announced.
