Incredibles 2 (2018)

The second movie of the day is the one just released, Incredibles 2.

The Movie:

Incredibles 2 is the 20th Pixar movie and the sequel 14 years in the making.  Officially opening in theaters today, the movie is getting a mostly positive reaction from critics and fans alike.

Incredibles 2 picks up with the battle against the Underminer teased at the end of the first movie, which was set three months after the main story of that film.  "Supers" are still illegal though, and as a result of the battle, the entire Parr family is arrested.  Though they are released, the government shuts down its support for "Super Relocation," leaving the Parrs just two weeks in a motel an no means of income for the family.  Along with Frozone, they are approached by tycoon Winston Deavor, who wants to use a targeted public relations campaign to rehabilitate the supers' image and make them legal again.  He chooses Elastigirl to be the face of this campaign, leaving Bob to tend for his children, including Jack-Jack's ever-evolving roster of powers.

Of all the Pixar movies crying out for a sequel, The Incredibles was at the top of the list.  And for the most part, Incredibles 2 delivers.  It doesn't really do anything groundbreaking, as it primarily builds on the themes and characters of the first movie, but it manages to be, pardon the pun, incredibly fun.  Visually, it is easy to see how far CG animation has come over the last 14 years, as some parts of the first movie look very dated compared to the new movie.

Once again, Michael Giacchino delivers a fun, jazzy score that matches the movie's tone, providing yet another example that he is one of the most versatile composers in Hollywood.

Presence in the Parks:

Disney always tries to find a way to promote the most current movies in the parks, especially if they are big blockbuster films.  Along those lines, the parks on both coasts are celebrating an "Incredible Summer."  On the west coast, this coincides with DCA's Pixar Pier revamp mentioned in the last entry, with the new Incredicoaster ride officially opening a week from tomorrow.

Over in WDW, The Incredibles are taking over Tomorrowland with an event called the Incredible Tomorrowland Expo.  The dance party returns as Super Party Time, and Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl, and Frozone are now joined by Edna Mode, who is riding around the land in her own SuperMobile.  Other characters from the movie are roaming around as well, and Incredibles themed decor and music have been placed in Tomorrowland.

Since I will be visiting WDW later this summer, I will have a chance to see this summer event firsthand.
